HOUSE OF LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES IN OPERATION
EUROTALES (Talking Atlas of the Linguistic Cultures at European Sites) – Museum of the Voices of Europe — is part of CALLIOPE (House of Languages and Literatures in Operation), whose mission is to establish new approaches to the research, representation, study, and dissemination of the intangible cultural heritage comprised by the many languages used in Europe, historically and in the present. Calliope’s overall objective is to disseminate conscious practices of recognizing and appreciating the linguistic culture of each individual within the context of their integrating community. Thus, it fosters not only dialogue between cultures but also the construction of a shared identity that can enhance diversity and multiculturalism and nurture social cohesion and inclusion.
CALLIOPE is located in Sapienza’s Marco Polo building, in a neighbourhood that is both historic and marginal. CALLIOPE is a centre for community and experimentation, offering an exhibition space for research and for reflection on the cultures that communities express. It was created together with, rather than for, the neighbourhood and the city, in constant dialogue and active collaboration with the fabric of social life. It promotes cultural initiatives born from collaboration between the University and the local community, in particular, presenting thematic exhibitions and shows on migrant languages; mapping linguistic histories of the inhabitants of our territories; hosting musical and theatrical performances; providing for meetings and readings with Italian and foreign writers; and organizing workshops and seminars for Sapienza students, with the involvement of high school teachers and students.
