RESONANCES

PAST

PRESENT

Resonances store and describe the unique linguistic identity of individuals, which is never monolingual and absorbed exclusively by the language which dominates in one's community. It is constituted by our mother tongue, as well as by alt the languages which resonate in us. These embrace the languages we use with family and friends, those used in forma! settings, the language through which we were taught to read and write, and the languages that belong to our own linguistic genealogies, parents and grandparents and our closest family members. For writers and performers, an integral part of their linguistic identity is the language(s) used for their art.
Resonances past captures linguistic information relating to historical personages, many of whom you will recognize, integrating this with their biographies and writings. What was the mother tongue of Raymond Lull, Napoleone, Alessandro Manzoni, Hannah Arendt or Romain Gary? From this collection it emerges that one's mother tongue rarely coincides with the language we associate with historical figures. We encourage you to consider how linguistic biography and genealogy interact with cultural production and political reality.
Resonances present collect information on the linguistic cultures of our contemporaries in an anonymized way for a selection of European cities, relating them to age, provenance and other persona! data. If you would like to participate, please fili out one of our questionnaires!
